Break In At HRGS

Friday afternoon we received the bad news that thieves had broken in to our FM transmitter site. They cut the razor wire, crawled over the wall and under the electric fencing and then destroyed the security door on the transmitter building. They stole tools and some extra transmission cable. We are now in the process of re-securing the transmitter site.

Studio Refitting at Radio HRGS

In our previous videos we documented our work in reestablishing the digital link between our studios and the transmitter site. Once that was established we were then able to bring the studio equipment back to the studios. The operation went rather smoothly and we are now back to broadcasting from the studios.

Tower Climbing Part 2

When we left you last time on Tower Climbing Part 1 we had a tenuous link established from our studios to our transmitter site. After beating our heads against the wall for a while, Jerry found out that the power supply that came with the new data radio didn't have enough "Juice Bruce." After building a better power supply we were ready to put the other antenna back up on the tower.

During the big thunderstorm August 30th a lightening strike took out part of our studio to transmitter link. It took us a while to get the replacement equipment down here to Roatan, but it finally arrived. Our hope was that we could switch the new equipment for the torched equipment and everything would get up and run. That isn't exactly what happened. I am not sure how many times I went up and down our tower, but I can tell you that there were four days of tower climbing before everything was set up properly.

This site is well know for having the tallest stellas in the Maya world as well as the only place where you will see carvings on large round boulders. Six years ago I was issued a five year driver's license for the country of Honduras. A week ago I was stopped at a check point and the police officer asked to see my license. I didn't have a clue it was expired. I then set about to renew my license. Here in Honduras a person needs to have a physical exam and an eye exam before a license will be issued. Once I took care of those two items I set off for town to get my license. Why don't you come along? It's a nice walk.

This beach is well known as being one of the top beaches in the world and we have the privilege of living near West Bay. If you've never snorkeled in the tropics before it's a little like being IN a huge aquarium. Some of the things you will see, besides us that is, are Blue Tang (fish), a Queen Angel Fish and Brain Coral (you'll know it when you see it. Before we jump into our adventure, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that you don't have to worry about getting wet. The bad news is that you won't be in the water to enjoy it with us. Who knew playing basketball could be such a treacherous endeavor? Last week while playing basketball on the court here in Gravel Bay, Roatan, I caught a stray elbow with my nose. I don't recommend the human nose as a means for stopping a flying elbow, however as a last resort it can be done. I really regret not having gotten some "before" footage, but here is a bit of the storyline after the first trip to the clinic to reset my nose. This video takes place over a one week period.

We'd like to take you to a church in West End that is unique for many reasons, not the least of which is its location on the beach of Half Moon Bay. Sandi has conducted many Bible studies with various ladies here on Roatan. From time to time she has also had some young people who wanted to have a Bible study with her. Recently Sandi began a Bible study with Valerie who lives next door to us. We are going to see what goes on in one of these studies.

Birthday cake on Roatan

Friday the 29th of January was the birthday of Charie Bodden. Charie lives here on Roatan just down the road from us and she came to know Christ as her Savior two years ago and since then she and Sandi have had weekly Bible studies together. The day before Charie's birthday her daughter Mya came to our house to have Sandi help her make a birthday cake for her mom. Let's see how birthday cakes are made in the Bay Islands of Honduras.

Getting up on the wrong side of the computer

I'm sure you have had a morning or two where you "woke up on the wrong side of the bed." We all have those from time to time, whether you live in Roatan, the USA, or anywhere for that matter. Have you ever started off on the wrong side of the computer? I'm sure you have...I think we all have, unless of course you have a Mac. My office computer is not a Mac and it came very close to taking some swimming lessons.

Sandi had an opportunity to attend a domestic abuse seminar in Phoenix thanks to the generosity of a friend. She was gone for just over a week and Saydee and I were glad to have her come home.

A trip to the grocery store

People sometimes ask us what we do for grocery shopping. We have three "big" grocery stores as well as many small neighborhood stores. I'd like to take you to one of the stores in the town of Coxen Hole. It's called Eldon's.

Tourists Invade Roatan

Every so often friends of ours take a cruise that stops here at Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Today was one of those days as seven of our friends came for a visit. Besides showing them the Radio HRGS facility, we ate some island food for lunch and then went snorkeling at West Bay Beach, right next to Tabayana Resort. We all had a great time...hey, maybe you should take a cruise aboard a Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Lines ship. We'd love to see you.

The Adventures of Saydee The Wonder Dog

Saydee is an 11 month old German Shepherd who came to live with us last May. She loves going to the beach and playing in the shallow water. We're going to talk a walk along the narrow beach in front of our house. It certainly isn't West Bay Beach or Half Moon Bay Beach, but it is close to our house. Come and join us.

Right here on the Island of Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras, Radio HRGS is the most listened to of the seven radio stations on our island. After living on Roatan for over ten years we have gotten to know a lot of people. It doesn't matter where we go on this island it seems that we always come across someone who listens to Radio HRGS. Mark Elwin is a good friend of ours. Anytime our car has some troubles we go right to Mark's shop. Mark is also a faithful listener to Radio HRGS, but don't take my word for it, listen to what Mark has to say.

Do You Like Squash?

When I was a kid living in Minnesota I never did like eating squash. However since moving to Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras my appetite for squash has exploded. Sandi and I stay very busy at Radio HRGS, however to take a break we head over to West Bay to the home of our friend TJ Lynch. TJ has introduced us to the GAME of squash and we really enjoy it. Besides getting a lot of exercise, TJ and I are accountability partners and enjoy a lot of good fellowship after we play.

Church on Sunday varies from Sunday to Sunday because each Sunday we are in a different church. Every fourth Sunday of the month we attend a small church in Pensacola (not that Pensacola) that is without a pastor. We thought you'd like to see what a typical service is like.
