Christmas Eve on Roatan

What is it like on Christmas Eve on the island of Roatan? First of all you have to throw out any ideas of a "White Christmas." I guess you could say it is rather atypical, especially when a cow falls out of a truck right in front of our house. I thought we'd give you a bit of a peak at our Christmas Eve. Oh and Merry Christmas.

Our journey from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras was a study in contrasts. From overnight lows of about 10 degrees and fresh snow to temperatures in the lower 80s and liquid snow. Come on along for the ride.

Dark Chocolate and Red Mountain Pass

Some of our travel lately has been boring, but we did have the opportunity to visit the mountain town of Ouray, Colorado, home of the elegant Beaumont Hotel. We also drove one of the more treacherous highways in the USA, the Million Dollar Highway which brought us to Red Mountain Pass. Before that however we made a stop at the Russell Stover store in Montrose, Colorado for some dark chocolate.

Getting Down with the Swamp Dawgs

During our "Relative Weekend" some of us guys went searching for some ATV adventure. We grabbed the Polaris Sportsman X2 800 and the Kodiak 400 and rode off to the ATV trails. Fortunately we found a couple of mud bogs and as "boys" will do we had to play in the mud. To say we had fun would be a serious understatement. Why don't you join us for the fun?

Coming to America

We have flown from Roatan to the USA to begin our furlough. This year we will be traveling in the western part of the USA. One of the great things about Coming to America is seeing family. Jake and Susanna have recently moved to a new apartment, so we are going to drop in on them and then get a tour of the Saint Anthony Village Fire Station.

The Dual Language Project - Final Chapter

This past Monday was a memorable day at Radio HRGS. The day after the radio station's 20th Anniversary we put our Dual Language Project on the air. This video spans several days and will give you an inside look as we began broadcasting with our Dual Language Project.

Bay Islands Paint a Thon

Paint doesn't last very long in the tropics, so we considered ourselves fortunate when a group of young people from Berean Baptist Church in Livonia, MI came to Roatan to help us paint the radio station and the mission houses. We had some setbacks during the week, but our group of painters did a fantastic job. If you have nothing to do, why don't you pick up a brush and come down some time? We'll find something for you to paint.

Cooking With Peter

Perhaps you have wondered about island life. What do we do on the island of Roatan? What do we eat? Is there an "Island Style" to our lives? The answer is yes. I'd like to show you how you can in just a few easy steps start to prepare foods "the island way."

NOT Dueling Banjos...Dueling Languages

We've had some camera troubles lately, that is why there have not been any new videos in some time. Hopefully we are on the road to recovery. We are in the midst of a new project at HRGS Radio which we have called "The Dual Language Project." This will allow us to have both English and Spanish on the air all day long instead of our current situation of simulcasting. Here is a preliminary look at our project.

A Tropical Saturday

There is no such thing as a "typical Saturday" here on Roatan. Each one is unique and many times quite an adventure. I thought I'd take you along on some errands that I had last Saturday. We're going to a town called French Harbour. Make sure your seat belt is buckled.

Tropical Golf

As I said in the previous video I had to go over to La Ceiba for a bit of business last week. This video will give you a quick tour of the D' Antoni Golf Course. Be prepared because it's not quite what you would expect. Let's hit the links...or if you want to be spiritual, we'll "visit the Greens."

Another Adventure In La Ceiba

I had to go over to La Ceiba for a bit of business the other day. Honest, it was a legitimate business trip...okay, I did play a little golf on the side, I'll admit to that, but only under severe torture. More about that in the next video. I'd like to show you a few more sights and sounds around La Ceiba...I sure hope you like the trip, besides, it won't cost you much.

The Adventures of Saydee The Wonder Dog - Part 2

Saydee is our year old German Shepherd. She has certainly added a lot of fun to our lives. She loves to go down to the beach and play in the sand and the warm waters of the Caribbean. She also has some doggie friends that she wants you to meet. So come along for The Adventures of Saydee the Wonder Dog.

Computers Crocodiles and Dentists

The interesting thing about living on Roatan is that our days are so...interesting. Frustrating would be another word that gets used from time to time, but one thing is for certain we rarely have boring days. I'd like to take you along on my Thursday to show you some of the things that were waiting for me as the day unfolded.

Saturday Surprise

You may be wondering what is so surprising about a Saturday. The Saturday in question was not just any old Saturday. There was a big surprise (which I can't tell you about, you have to watch the video to see the surprise) and there is also a great opportunity for you and I'll give you all the details in the video. What are you waiting for? Push "Play."

Tour de Roatan - Part 4 Calabashing

The Tour de Roatan continues with a a look at some odds and ends. Today, bicycles, an Audi, a boat and Calabash Bight will be our destinations. There are times when interesting things happen here on Roatan...however I don't always have the camera ready. This time I was ready. I hope you enjoy the variety of this final video in the Tour de Roatan series.

Tour de Roatan - Part 3 Snorkeling at West Bay Beach

he Tour de Roatan continues with a great snorkeling adventure at West Bay Beach. This beach is well known as being one of the top beaches in the world and we have the privilege of living near West Bay. If you've never snorkeled in the tropics before it's a little like being IN a huge aquarium. Some of the things you will see, besides us that is, are Blue Tang (fish), a Queen Angel Fish and Brain Coral (you'll know it when you see it. Before we jump into our adventure, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that you don't have to worry about getting wet. The bad news is that you won't be in the water to enjoy it with us. Let's go!

Tour de Roatan - Part 2 Golfing at the Black Pearl Golf Course

As we continue with our Tour de Roatan, we would like to take you to the Black Pearl Golf course here on Roatan. The Black Pearl is part of a huge development that will include a full 18 hole golf course, hotels, a marina, condos and house. Mark and I don't really care about all that extra stuff, were just out there to play some golf. BTW, this golf course was designed by the very famous Pete Dye. We didn't meet him while we were there, but we had a great time. Come on, let's hit the links.

Tour de Roatan - Part 1

You may have heard of the Tour de France, the bicycle race that Lance Armstrong owned for so many years. We'd like to take you on the Tour de Roatan. It's not a bicycle event, however you will be able to see various parts of our island such as: West Bay Beach, part of the Great Mayan Reef, we'll go golfing, snorkeling, eat Thai food and generally have a great time. All of this is possible because Sandi's niece Bente and her husband Mark came to visit us. Join us now for Tour de Roatan - Part 1.

Sunday Morning In The Tropics

A tropical Sunday morning on Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras finds us getting ready to head down to the Flowers Bay Baptist Church. Saydee has Sunday mornings pretty much figured out...that is she is going to get left home alone. We would like to show you what church is like in Flowers Bay. You will find some similarities to church in the States and there will be some differences as well.

Canopy Tour Roatan Style

If you have wondered what tourists do when they come to Roatan this video is for you. On our day off Sandi and I went to one of our cruise ship ports and pretended to be tourists. Along the way we ran into one of our friends who operates a zip line canopy tour. We have decided that we will take you along on our tourist adventure. Most tours of this magnitude would cost a pretty penny, however since you are our friends we will cut you a deal. Come on, let's be tourists.

Plumbing Nightmares

You've probably had one of those plumbing days when you would just as soon flush a stick of dynamite down the toilet as pull the toilet to fix the problem. We had one of those days recently. We used something that was very similar to dynamite...or at least the reaction seemed to be similar. Check it out.

The Oak Ridge Boys and Girls

This past Sunday Sandi and I traveled to the town of Oak Ridge. I suppose I could spin some sort of tale about how the Oak Ridge Boys got their start in the town of Oak Ridge on Roatan. However if I did that I don't think you would bite, but I would like to invite you to come with us as we visit Oak Ridge.

Saturday, March 6, 2010

We hadn't had a party in a long time, so when Victoria Agular, the lady who cleans the radio station, completed ten years of working at the station it seemed to be a perfect time to throw a party. Cake and ice cream were on the menu and a good time was had by all. I'm sorry that we didn't save and cake or ice cream for you, but you can come to the party anyway.

The Sights and Sounds of La Ceiba

Walking the streets of La Ceiba is always interesting. You can find run down old houses next to stores or new construction. It seems that there is an over abundance of taxis and noise...but then there is the D'Antoni Golf Course and that puts everything into perspective. Come along with me and I'll show you some of the sights and sounds of La Ceiba.

Traveling In The Caribbean

From time to time Sandi and I have to travel to the coastal city of La Ceiba. This is on the northern coast of Honduras, about a one hour ferry boat ride from the island of Roatan. We have a couple of videos to show you regarding our recent trip to La Ceiba. This video is about the trip, the next video will be The Sights and Sounds of La Ceiba.

Sunday, February 21, 2010

Diamond Rock or Rock the Diamond

We would like to take you on a trip to the east end of Roatan where we will be attending the Diamond Rock Baptist Church. I should mention that this was taped while I still had the tape on my nose.

Saturday In A Tropical Paradise

I don't know what your Saturdays are like, but here in Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras our Saturdays tend to have a lot of variety. I thought I'd take you along with us and show you a few highlights from one of our Saturdays here in our Tropical Paradise.

The Nose Job - Apotheosis

This past Monday (Sandi's Birthday) was the big day for my nose, the tape was due to come off. I've looked forward to this day for some time now. I'd like to take you along with me as my good friend Dr. Raymond removes the tape from my nose. I just have one small surprise for him.

Sandi's Birthday Video

Today is Sandi's birthday. Fear of another broken nose keeps me from disclosing her age, but I thought I'd share with you one of her presents. I collected birthday greetings from a number of our friends around the island and put them together in a video. It is a bit long, but you will get to see some of our friends.

The Nose Job

Who knew playing basketball could be such a treacherous endeavor? Last week while playing basketball on the court here in Gravel Bay, Roatan, I caught a stray elbow with my nose. I don't recommend the human nose as a means for stopping a flying elbow, however as a last resort it can be done. I really regret not having gotten some "before" footage, but here is a bit of the storyline after the first trip to the clinic to reset my nose. This video takes place over a one week period.

Sunday Morning In West End

Many times people ask us where we attend church on Roatan. That depends on the Sunday. We'd like to take you to a church in West End that is unique for many reasons, not the least of which is its location on the beach of Half Moon Bay. The floors are tile and the walls are cement, so be prepared as there is sometimes a bit of background noise.

The Gravel Bay Bible Study

Sandi has conducted many Bible studies with various ladies here on Roatan. From time to time she has also had some young people who wanted to have a Bible study with her. Recently Sandi began a Bible study with Valerie who lives next door to us. We are going to see what goes on in one of these studies.

A Night Out With The Silseths

From time to time Sandi and I get out of the house and enjoy a time of fellowship with some of our co-workers. Tonight we will be traveling to Job's Bight to the home of Travis and Emily Mitten and their children. You may join us if you wish.

Birthday cake on Roatan

Friday the 29th of January was the birthday of Charie Bodden. Charie lives here on Roatan just down the road from us and she came to know Christ as her Savior two years ago and since then she and Sandi have had weekly Bible studies together. The day before Charie's birthday her daughter Mya came to our house to have Sandi help her make a birthday cake for her mom. Let's see how birthday cakes are made in the Bay Islands of Honduras.

Getting up on the wrong side of the computer

I'm sure you have had a morning or two where you "woke up on the wrong side of the bed." We all have those from time to time, whether you live in Roatan, the USA, or anywhere for that matter. Have you ever started off on the wrong side of the computer? I'm sure you have...I think we all have, unless of course you have a Mac. My office computer is not a Mac and it came very close to taking some swimming lessons.

Sandi came home

Sandi had an opportunity to attend a domestic abuse seminar in Phoenix thanks to the generosity of a friend. She was gone for just over a week and Saydee and I were glad to have her come home.

A trip to the grocery store

People sometimes ask us what we do for grocery shopping. We have three "big" grocery stores as well as many small neighborhood stores. I'd like to take you to one of the stores in the town of Coxen Hole. It's called Eldon's.

Tourists Invade Roatan

Every so often friends of ours take a cruise that stops here at Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Today was one of those days as seven of our friends came for a visit. Besides showing them the Radio HRGS facility, we ate some island food for lunch and then went snorkeling at West Bay Beach, right next to Tabayana Resort. We all had a great time...hey, maybe you should take a cruise aboard a Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Lines ship. We'd love to see you.

Monday, January 18, 2010

The Adventures of Saydee The Wonder Dog

Saydee is an 11 month old German Shepherd who came to live with us last May. She loves going to the beach and playing in the shallow water. We're going to talk a walk along the narrow beach in front of our house. It certainly isn't West Bay Beach or Half Moon Bay Beach, but it is close to our house. Come and join us.

Sunday, January 17, 2010

Saturday Night Pizza

If you like pizza why don't you come with me? Jerry and Mildred Petersen, our co-workers, have invited me over for pizza. We'll have a good time and the food will be great.

Sandi's Kitchen

I am truly a blessed man. Not only is my wife a good cook, but I love her food. She keeps our home well stocked with all sorts of delightful food. If you come for a visit I might even share some of it with you. You better call before you come though...that will give me time to hide the best stuff.

Tuesday Morning at Radio HRGS

Monday through Thursday mornings here on Roatan I am the early morning announcer at Radio HRGS. I guess you could call it Morning Drive Time, although not every one here in the Bay Islands drives to work. I thought I'd give you a little peak into my morning here on the island.

What Station Is On Your Presets?

Right here on the Island of Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras, Radio HRGS is the most listened to of the seven radio stations on our island. After living on Roatan for over ten years we have gotten to know a lot of people. It doesn't matter where we go on this island it seems that we always come across someone who listens to Radio HRGS. Mark Elwin is a good friend of ours. Anytime our car has some troubles we go right to Mark's shop. Mark is also a faithful listener to Radio HRGS, but don't take my word for it, listen to what Mark has to say.

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Do You Like Squash?

When I was a kid living in Minnesota I never did like eating squash. However since moving to Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras my appetite for squash has exploded. Sandi and I stay very busy at Radio HRGS, however to take a break we head over to West Bay to the home of our friend TJ Lynch. TJ has introduced us to the GAME of squash and we really enjoy it. Besides getting a lot of exercise, TJ and I are accountability partners and enjoy a lot of good fellowship after we play.

Church on Sunday varies from Sunday to Sunday because each Sunday we are in a different church. Every fourth Sunday of the month we attend a small church in Pensacola (not that Pensacola) that is without a pastor. We thought you'd like to see what a typical service is like.
